Lots of people spend tons of money to drive the traffic to their sites, investing in many advertising campaigns and different forms of traffic generation methods. This is all worthwhile. You don’t have to do this if you don’t really have the resources. There are many ways to generate low cost website traffic without having to spend an arm & a leg. Many have used high cost methods and have ended up losing their shirt over it [example: spending money on PPC-pay per click ads]. Here are a few ways that you can generate low cost website traffic, which should help your site a lot.

This is like exchanging links but on a different level. This may cost a bit more than exchanging links but can be made cheaper because you get to earn credits [by paying with your 'time']. You can use those credits to show other members your own site(s). Traffic exchange services are the viewing of another’s site or page in exchange for others viewing yours. You both benefit from each others efforts to generate traffic. Once again the public awareness of your sites existence is boosted, immediately. I recommend you surf as many hours per day as you can and/or buy chunks of credits when they are on 'sale' and upgrade at sites that offer a big list of benefits in return. Exchange Links
This is a sure and proven method. Rarely do you see a site where there is no link to another site. Many webmasters are willing to exchange links with one another so that they can produce more public awareness about their sites. When it comes to exchanging links with other sites it is wise to be in the same niche or have associated content as the other site. They should share a common subject so that there is continuity in providing service and information that interests your target traffic. This method also boosts your chances of getting a high ranking in search engine results. Search engines rank sites higher, that have inbound and outbound theme-related links. With a good ranking position in the search engines, you will generate more traffic in your website without the high costs.
Article Submission
There are many e-zines and online encyclopedias on the internet which provide free space for articles to be submitted. If you want to save costs, you can write the articles yourself. There are many freelance writers who are willing to write for you for a fee, but to save money, it is wise to do these yourself.
Write articles that are along the lines of your niche site. Write something that you have expertise on so that when they read it, they will be educated & eager to go to the site you recommend. Write articles that produce tips and guidelines of the subject or niche.
Include a resource box at the end of your article that can link them to your site. Write a little about yourself and your site. If you provide a light, informative and interesting article, they will go to your site for more.
Create a Newsletter
This may sound like hard work because of all the articles you may need to use to build a newsletter but on the contrary, this is not so. There are many writers and sites that are willing to provide free articles as long as they can get their name in on your newsletter, because this provides free advertising for them as well. As your newsletter gets shared, you can widen public awareness about you, and build an opt-in list that will regularly visit your site.
Join Communities and Forums
This only requires your time and nothing else. Share your two cents and let them see how knowledgeable you are with the subject. As you build your reputation, you also build the reputation of your site, making it a reputable and honest business that can & will be frequented and trusted by many people. When you participate in forum discussions by asking questions or answering another user, you exhibit your knowledge in your field. If your answer contains good information, they get interested in browsing your site [in your 'signature file] to know more about you. This can lead to more visits to your page, assuming that you post your web site link or an offer for something valuable beneath your name.
Participate in Blogs
Blogs are a smart way to use the Internet to drive traffic to your online business. Blogs attract like-minded people who get together because they are looking for the same thing. By commenting in blogs, you can quickly build up a community of fans for your business by sharing your knowledge and ideas. But blogs also help you increase your web site’s ranking with search engines by getting tons of free quality inbound links. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is 'casting a vote' for that site. The more votes that are cast = the more important the page must be--but another part of this is to look at the authority of the site.
Post Comments in Facebook/Twitter
Facebook and Twitter are two of the biggest social networking services today. Millions of users post personal and business information about themselves every day, in addition to chatting with friends, sending well wishes, posting events, even announcing a new product. FB and Twitter are the social places where people hang out. These are perfect places for you to help others out.
Remember to share quality information, knowledge and ideas that are linked to other sites. Example, when someone asks a question on Twitter, you can respond in detail in a blog post and link to it from Facebook and vice versa. Because it helps them (over time) to know, like & trust YOU. Because they will retain more information, can pause to take handwritten notes, can rewind when interrupted (kids, remember?) Because it is very SHARE YOUR CONTENT: easy to send a friend, associate, etc a link to a video so they get to see exactly what your visitor just saw, and they can process it however their brain chooses to do so. Because they'd rather watch a video and then read more details below it, than read,read, read, and then 'oh yeah, there's a video way down there....'(oh man, I could have saved some time just watching to see if I even WANT to learn more). I suggest you write down on a note card the points you will mention in you video, start with a bit of personal background, what you plan to educate others about with future videos, and always ask for feedback & comments. Let people know they can contact you for help. Try to keep your eyes on the cam, if you have to tape two 'eyeballs' up by your cam to focus, do so. Try to be natural and don't force a smile. You may want to play your favorite music for a bit to get you in a more relaxed mood. Ok, enough for now. [How to get more visitors to Your Site from Search Engines searches]
Do keyword research
When looking at keyword data think about your traffic targets. For generic keyword searches, even if you rank high in Google, you may only get a small percentage of the predicted traffic. However with keyword searches related to your brand, your site can benefit from a much higher proportion of the predicted traffic if you are the brand. So for example if you are IBM you may get the majority of search traffic if you rank for IBM. Don’t forget the long tail, because the long tail of search can offer the bulk of traffic. Due to the more detailed nature of the query searched for, it can generate better quality traffic.
Choose a relevant domain Pick a domain with a target keyword in the URL if possible and preferably secure a domain name with some equity/authority. One way to do this is to look for dropped domains, or simply buy an existing live one.
Build good website content
Generally speaking the best content for SEO is to have words not pictures and content should be original and unique to your site. Your website content should be relevant to the keywords and phrases you are targeting. Original and unique web content can help with SEO and sales making it a win/win. Google is tightening up on duplicate content. The more duplicate content you have, the more it will start to hurt. It is important not to copy other people’s websites, but instead think of ways you can re-work content. Home page text is very important. Home page copy should be a bold testament and there should be links made from within that content to other parts of the website. For ecommerce websites ensure unique product descriptions are written, as it’s vital to avoid publishing manufacturers descriptions verbatim. For websites with thousands of products, pick the high-ticket items and make sure to rewrite them. Other ways to add useful text content to pages can include carrying product reviews from customers, produce content about brands or create user guides and 'how to' pieces.
Create enticing title tags
The title tag is the most important place to put keywords so it’s crucial to create a unique title tag for every page. The title tag is a salesman for the page – it’s what the user first sees for your website in the search results.
Make good use of the 67 visible characters in a title tag to maximize the clickthrough rate (CTR). Include a good call to action as this increases the clickthrough rate because Google is analyzing the CTR for organic search results.
Write meta descriptions The limit is 155 visible characters and it is a great place to deliver messages! To decide on which keywords to include in a page’s description tag, use your analytics software to find which keywords deliver the most traffic to that page. Then optimize your meta description to include those keywords. If you have keywords in the meta description, there is a good chance Google will show your this as part of its results page so aim to include a call to action in there as well.
Including words in the meta keywords tag has no influence on search engines. Google even says this too on their Webmaster Central blog here - so it’s certainly not a priority to add the meta keywords tag.
Use H1/H2 Tags:
The H1 header is important and H2 and H3 tags should be keyword rich and supportive to the H1. It is certainly viable to have multiple H1 tags on a home page with H2s underneath. However for product pages it is recommended that only one H1 tag be used with H2 tags underneath.
Include on-page keywords:
Use keywords naturally as part of your website copy. Do not stuff pages with repetitions of target terms in an unnatural way. Check out the competition to see what they are doing with a keyword density tool.
Buildlinks:
Link building can be the most important and most difficult part of SEO. This is because Google values links, but at the same time Google penalizes link buyers - so getting the right balance for links is hard.
It is useful to start by thinking about who will link to you naturally – perhaps local media in response to news, suppliers, partners, sponsorships or friends? Once this route is exhausted another option is to compile competitors links. It is still possible to use Yahoo Site Explorer to do this for now (however this tool will shut down soon). What makes the perfect link? Relevant anchor text, pointing at a relevant page from a relevant site - so in this respect it is all about relevancy. However over-cooking anchor text and using words too often can hurt you. The art of link building is to mix up anchor text, use brand and domain links and even include ‘natural’ key phrases like "click here".
Authority outweighs relevancy
What this means is that a website with the best quality signals stands a better chance of ranking higher than one that is simply relevant but with little or no authority. We can see this because on a website with authority, a page can rank for many different things. Influential factors outweighing relevancy include inbound links, freshness of content and authority.
Site speed is important
Avoid code bloat. Keep JavaScript, images and CSS external. You can also check site speeds for websites with tools like Pingdom. This will help give an average speed as a yardstick - remember you don't want to be the slowest!
Don’t launch empty websites
It’s important not to launch a site empty with a ‘Page under construction’ status. Instead start building the basics of the website as a blog and create a content rich holding page. Get relevant pages of information in place to give Google something to chew on and then go live with the proper website and 301.
